DREAM ACT Back on the Table
The Dream Act - a long-contested bill in Congress - is going before the Senate soon. The Act, if passed, would allow illegal immigrant children who came to the United States before the age of 16 to adjust their status (obtain work permits, etc.) if they've been in the United States for at least 5 years and have an otherwise clean background.
Previously Democrats have demanded full immigration reform be passed rather than settling for the Dream Act. With elections on the horizen and Comprehensive Immigration Reform eluding Congress, however, Democrats have changed their tune. On the other hand, some Republicans complain that the Act is "amnesty." Whether the bill will garner enough to pass remains to be seen. It is certain, however, to draw plenty of attention. We'll keep you posted.
