So What, Arizona? I live in California.
Immigration has been a hot topic in the news as of late, mostly due to Arizona passing what some term, "the toughest immigration law yet." Some cheer Arizona for taking a tough stance, while others cry foul. Whatever your personal situation and beliefs, there are some things you should know:
1. You should always carry proof of your status with you. Although California is unlikely to pass a similar law, keeping your "papers" with you as an immigrant is part of federal law.
2. Stay out of trouble. Seriously. Breaking the smallest of laws can wreak havoc on your immigration status. Certainly don't drink and drive or injure others.
3. Keep abreast of law changes. Senators this week (the first week of May) have released their vision of comprehensive immigration reform. This might affect you (and your status), your family, your friends. President Obama said we should anticipate immigration reform to be an issue next year.
If you have any questions about HOW law changes will affect you, please call me office or e-mail me. I'm certainly watching the changes closely so that when they come, I'll be ready to advise clients accordingly.
4. Lastly, stay in status. And if (heaven forbid), you fall out of status, don't be traveling to Arizona.
